 Campus Life

Hostel life is a key part of college at IIT Bhilai, offering much more than just a place to stay. Our vibrant student community creates a lively and memorable experience. Despite being a young institute, IIT Bhilai has built a strong student culture where people from diverse backgrounds come together. The Council of Student Affairs (CoSA) oversees various clubs and associations, each led by a coordinator. Students are encouraged to join clubs that match their interests, making hostel life active, engaging, and enjoyable.

UGC Regulation on Anti Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions

 Objective:

To root out ragging in all its forms from universities, colleges and other educational institutions in the country by prohibiting it by law, preventing its occurrence by following the provisions of these Regulations and punishing those who indulge in ragging as provided for in these Regulations and the appropriate law in force.

 Definitions:

For the purposes of these Regulations:

  • "college" means any institution, whether known as such or by any other name, which provides for a programme of study beyond 12 years of schooling for obtaining qualification from a university and which, in accordance with the rules and regulations of such university, is recognized as competent to provide for such programme of study and present students undergoing such programme of study for the examination for the award of such qualification.
  • "Head of the institution" means the 'Vice-Chancellor' in case of a university/deemed to be university, 'Principal' in case of a college, 'Director' in case of an institute.
  • "institution" means a higher educational institution (HEI), like a university, a college, an institute, etc. imparting higher education beyond 12 years of schooling leading to a degree (graduate, postgraduate and/or higher level) and/or to a university diploma.
  • "Ragging" means the following: Any conduct whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness any other student, indulging in rowdy or undisciplined activities which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension thereof in a fresher or a junior student or asking the students to do any act or perform something which such student will not in the ordinary course and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche of a fresher or a junior student.
  • "Statutory/ReguIatory body" means a body so constituted by a Central/ State Government legislation for setting and maintaining standards in the relevant areas of higher education, such as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the Bar Council of India (BCI), the Dental Council of India (DCI), the Distance Education Council (DEC), the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), the Indian Nursing Council (INC), the Medical Council of India (MCI), the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), etc. and the State Higher Education Councils.
  • "University" means a university established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, a Provincial Act or a State Act, an institution deemed to be university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or an institution specially empowered by an Act of Parliament to confer or grant degrees.

 Punishable ingredients of Ragging:

  • Abetment to ragging
  • Criminal conspiracy to rag
  • Unlawful assembly and rioting while ragging
  • Public nuisance created during ragging
  • Violation of decency and morals through ragging
  • Injury to body, causing hurt or grievous hurt
  • Wrongful restraint
  • Wrongful confinement
  • Use of criminal force
  • Assault as well as sexual offences or unnatural offences
  • Extortion
  • Criminal trespass
  • Offences against property
  • Criminal intimidation
  • Attempts to commit any or all of the above mentioned offences against the victim(s)
  • Physical or psychological humiliation
  • All other offences folllowing from the definition of "Ragging"

 Measures for prevention of ragging at the institutional level

  • The advertisement for admissions shall clearly mention that ragging is totally banned in the institution, and anyone found guilty of ragging and/or abetting ragging is liable to be punished appropriately.
  • The application form for admission/ enrolment shall have a printed undertaking, preferably both in English/Hindi and in one of the regional languages known to the institution and the applicant (English version given in Annexure I, Part l), to be filled up and signed by the candidate to the effect that he/she is aware of the law regarding prohibition of ragging as well as the punishments, and to the effect that he/she has not been expelled and/or debarred from admission by any institution and that he/she, if found guilty of the offence of ragging and/or abetting ragging, is liable to be punished appropriately.

 Punishments:

1. At the institution level

Depending upon the nature and gravity of the offence as established by the AntiRagging Committee of the institution, the possible punishments for those found guilty of ragging at the institution level shall be any one or any combination of the following:

  • Suspension from attending classes and academic privileges
  • Withholding/ withdrawing scholarship/ fellowship and other benefits
  • Debarring from appearing in any test/ examination or other evaluation process
  • Withholding results
  • Debarring from representing the institution in any regional, national or international meet, tournament, youth festival, etc.
  • Suspension/ expulsion from the hostel
  • Cancellation of admission
  • Rustication from the institution for period ranging from 1 to 4 semesters
  • Expulsion from the institution and consequent debarring from admission to any other institution for a specified period
  • Fine ranging between Rupees 25,000/- and Rupees 1 lakh
  • Collective punishment: When the persons committing or abetting the crime of ragging are not identified, the institution shall resort to collective punishment.
2. At the appointing authority level

The authorities of the institution, particularly the Head of the institution, shall be responsible to ensure that no incident of ragging takes place in the institution. In case any incident of ragging takes place, the Head shall take prompt and appropriate action against the person(s) whose dereliction of duty lead to the incident. The authority designated to appoint the Head shall, in its turn, take prompt and appropriate action against the Head.

3. At the UGC/Statutory/Regulatory level

  • Delisting the institution from section 12B of the UGC Act or any similar provision in the Act of the Statutory/Regulatory body concerned.
  • Withholding any grants allocated to it.
  • Declaring the institution ineligible for consideration for any assistance under any of the general or special assistance programmes of the UGC/Statutöry/ Regulatory body concerned.
  • Declaring that the institution does not have the minimum academic standards and warning the potential candidates for admission accordingly through public notice and posting on the UGC Website/ Website of the Statutory/Regulatory body concerned.
  • Taking such other action within its powers as it may deem fit and impose such other penalties as provided till such time as the institution achieves the objective of curbing ragging.
  • Collaborating with one another to work out other possible deterrents.

 Anti Ragging Comitee :

Ragging has no place on our campus. To ensure complete safety, we have established an Anti-Ragging Committee (ARC).

1. Members of the Anti Ragging Comitee(ARC) are:

  • Dr. Shailendra Kumar, Warden, Shivnath Hostel (MSH) - Member
  • President, CoSA - Member
2. The committee shall carry out the following activities:
  • It shall be the duty of the Anti-Ragging Commitee (ARC) to ensure compliance with the provisions of UGC Regulation on Curbing the Menace of Ragging in Higher Educational Institutions 2009, as well as the provisions of any law for the time being in force concerning ragging.
  • To take administrative action in the event or ragging.

 Hostels

IIT Bhilai offers modern, safe, and secure on-campus accommodation that makes settling in easy for students. The hostels are truly a home away from home, providing a comfortable and supportive environment for academic growth. Rooms are well-ventilated and fully furnished, with each student getting a separate bed with mattress, study table, chair, and almirah. All hostel premises are air-conditioned, Wi-Fi enabled, and have 24/7 internet access. IIT Bhilai has two boys’ hostels, one girls’ hostel, and a separate hostel for married students.

 Hostels Capacity

The Kanhar Hostel (BH1) for boys has a capacity of 476 plus 12 PWD spots, Gopad Hostel (BH2) for boys has a capacity of 486 plus 12 PWD spots, Indravati Hostel (GH1) for girls has a capacity of 316 plus 8 PWD spots, and Shivnath Hostel (MSH) for married scholars has 96 flats.

 Types of Rooms

We have single and double occupancy rooms.

 Other facilities

  • Rooms have fan, almirah, a table and a chair.
  • Toilets are commonly shared with the wing mates and are cleaned twice a day.
  • Recreation cum TV room is there in the hostels for entertainment purpose.
  • For the music lovers, there is a music room equipped with a drum set, congo set, keyboard, guitar and some other instruments.
  • All the hostels have indoor badminton court.
  • Table Tennis tables are also there for "ping-pong" lovers.
  • Air Conditioning is present in the hostels to keep the rooms cool during summer.

Network and Connectivity

As an IIT, the campus boasts excellent internet connectivity. The National Knowledge Network (NKN) serves as the institute’s ISP, offering speeds up to 1 Gbps and access to valuable academic resources like video lectures and seminars. Each student is provided with LAN access in hostel rooms and Wi-Fi, secured with a unique ID and password. IIT Bhilai also has a strong DC++ culture—a popular file-sharing system used for exchanging large files, academic software, movies, games, and more. Additionally, students have access to a common file storage system for sharing and retrieving files with peers.

Mess Facilities

The campus has a large central mess that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with evening snacks. In addition, there are 2-3 cafes open at night that offer snacks, drinks, noodles, and more.


Medical Facilities

Our institute has a well-established health center with 24/7 emergency support and an ambulance facility. More details about it are available on the IIT Bhilai website. Also, all hostels have first aid boxes available.

Transportation Facilities within Campus

All parts of our campus are very well connected through roads, pedestrian paths, and cycling tracks.
